Uses and Benefits of Lavender Essential Oils for men

Welcome back manly oilers… today I am going to share with you some of my findings around the uses and benefits of Lavender Essential Oils for men. Now, this isn’t one that I had planned to do for a number of reasons… firstly, because it doesn’t exactly have the most masculine smell to it and secondly, I didn’t really see any manly uses for it. However, as usual, my mind was changed for me based on the following conversation as I walked into the house the other day (I will keep it short, but you can probably guess where this is going)…

Me: Smells nice in here… did you clean?

Nic (my beautiful wife): No, I have lavender in the diffuser

Me: Well, there you go

Nic: You should really write about Lavender in your little blog

Me: Nope. Not manly enough

Nic: Do some research. Then lists all the things we use it for around the house…

And here we are… A Man Versus Oil review – Benefits of Lavender Essential Oils – how we do and can use them – even occasionally in a manly way!

What is Lavender essential oils?

So, when you get asked at your next trivia night, Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is a member of the mint family that is used mainly for perfumes, soaps, fresheners, and beauty products. It is also farmed extensively for use as essential oils. Lavender Essential Oils are produced via steam distillation.

What do we use Lavender essential oil for?

Now as you may be aware, I like to write about realistic uses for my oilsUses and Benefits of Lavender Essential Oils for men. Happy family and other chemical free processes. Here is a list of the things that my wife uses Lavender essential oils for:

Help our son sleep

Each night before he goes to bed, Nic was rubbing two drops on Lavender oil into the soles of his feet. I can tell you for sure… Since she has started doing that, he sleeps much better than he ever has. In time however, as as he has gotten more used the oils that we have, this has trangressed into a little ‘Sleep Blend’ that he loves  – and tells me it is good “because it is a manly smell hey dad!”.

We mix:

Top up roller bottle with Grapeseed oil. He rubs this on his feet each night and has been sleeping very well ever since.

Treatment of minor cuts

Mix 4 drops of Lavender oil with a tablespoon of Coconut Oil and rub onto minor cuts and abrasions. It provides a good protective cover and integrates the natural man-moisturising properties of the Lavender.  If you are after some extra anti-bacterial work here, add some Tea Tree or Lemongrass (or even Ylang Ylang if you are after a gentler mix)

In the diffuser

Lavender has a calming effect and is a good stress reliever. I am a naturally stressful person and I have to say that I have noticed my own sleep patterns are better when this is on… Plus, it really does smell ok.

Dandruff control

Mix it with Jojoba or Coconut oil in a 1 drop per tablespoon ratio (or more if needed) and massage into the scalp to moisturize the hair and control dandruff. I have tested this over the last couple of days and it actually does seem to work.

Hair Care

Lavender Essential oils are really really good for all things hair. I have read in a number of places that an equal part mixture of Lavender, Thyme, Rosemary and Cedarwood essential oils with a carrier oil actually promotes hair growth and baldness prevention – I have not tried this and cannot vouch for its effectiveness but where there’s smoke…

Note: This little formula is also promoted as a controller of head lice – something I will no doubt get to test as the little one continues his schooling life.

Calming effect

As mentioned above, Lavender is an extremely powerful calming agent.  It is discussed as being useful in many different use categories due to these properties as it assists with whatever the ailment is at the time.  It can be diffused on its own to assist with sleep or to reduce stress and also for a cold or illness.  Obviously it will not actually cure the illness but it is good at calming the body to allow it to deal with whatever ailment it is currently suffering from.

Sooth sunburn and skin conditions

Mix 4 drops to a teaspoon of Lavender and Coconut oil to sooth sunburn. It is also used often as a cooling treatment of eczema and other rashes caused by exposure to other chemicals and food types.

Relaxing Bath

Add 1 cup of Epsom salt and 15 drops of Lavender oil to a hot bath to relax and unwind after a long hard day being manly.

  1. I’ve read a lot about lavender essential oil, I personally know someone else who has a blog on essential oils (which is a cool site too), buuuut…. I LOVED how you presented this basic commonly used essential oil… with humor! 🙂   Kudos to your wife for encouraging you to write it!  Loved the pictures, loved how you broke it up into sections.. great job!

  2. Hello Paul,

I like your man’s perspective on lavender oil! I know lavender oil has many uses but I had not heard of the blend you mention for hair growth. I will have to show this to my husband. He actually likes the smell of lavender so he will be an easy sell! Do you know how it would be applied for that purpose? Would you just rub the mixture on your head once a day?

    Thanks,

    Jessica

    • HI Jessica, yes, that is what I have found to be the use for it.  I don’t have baldness however am currently trialing for a couple of weeks for dandruff and am massaging into scalp once a day.  Keep an eye out of rupdates.  Thanks ffor your comments.  Paul

  3. Well Paul, that’s a wise partner you have there. I absolutely love lavender and lavender oil. I definitely a male, I played aussie rules football, was a bouncer ( night club security guard) in my younger years. I could go on, but I think you get the drift. I’m a great fan of all essential oils. My wife sometimes gets embarrassed with me because , I love going shopping with her in some of the smaller alternative style stores. I’m the tall big guy you will see sniffing all the scented candles and going through all the different oil types. Now I hope you will do more articles on this fascinating subject ( essential oils that is). Do you think you can manage that? Jim

    • HI Jim..  haha.. yes, we do that too.  Absolutely I will be, I am trialling about 4 or 5 different uses at the moment so will keep you posted for sure.  Follow my facebook page for notifications.  thanks for your comments,  Paul

  4. I had no idea you could use lavender essential oil for all of those uses.  I thought people just used it because it smelt nice lol  I have been reading more and more on the benefits of essential oils but wasn’t sure where to start.  I like the fact that it helps you relax and sleep, also you can use for a variety of things on your skin.  I think you have sold me on joining club lavender for my first essential oil.  I’ll let you know what I think after I give it a try 🙂

  5. Whenever I smell lavender oil I think of my grandma. She always smelt of lavender.

I always knew that lavender helped you to sleep better, but didn’t realize that you could use it for a multitude of other ailments. Head lice, baldness and even for sunburn?

I think I am going to write down the one for baldness and let my husband try it out. He is willing to try anything to make his hair grow back on top.

    • Hi Michel – so glad you enjoyed the ariticle.  PLease let me know how he goes with the baldness test as I would love to post the results (anonymously of course!)

  6. Does the mixture of Lavender, Thyme, Rosemary and Cedarwood essential oils to promote hair growth is only for men? I liked your post, I will use lavender as you said, into the soles of my feet, if I sleep better will tell you. I like lavender, someone recommended it to heal some wounds in my skin and it was very good. Also I use it in a heat diffuser I have, and will change as soon as possible, the heat make changes in the chemical composition of the oils. Thank you for sharing this article.

    • HI Maria, All of my research has mentioned that mixture as a remedy (for want of a better term) to male baldness.  However, those ingredients are also outlined as ery good for hair care such as moisturising and scalp care.  We are in the process of trialing that mixture so keep an eye out n the very near future for some more results.

  8. Hello Paul,This is an interesting topic about Lavender oils.  I did not know that you can use it for sleeping problems and dandruff control instead of buying expensive dandruff shampoo.  I agree with you with your recommendations that it is natural and more important that it is safe to use.Thank you for a great review

  9. Hello Paul,

I do happen to like the smell of lavender. Lavender seems to have the ability to calm nerves and you duly included this in your write up.

I really haven’t used lavender oil before, but I like grooming my hair and I’ll sure look to make use of lavender oil, at least for its scent. Thanks for letting me know it doesn’t have any negative effect on hair except when dyed.

It’s possible for me to mix lavender oil with my regular hair cream, right?

    Expecting your feedback,

    thanks for writing.

    Warm regards

    • Hi louise, Thanks for stopping by.  Yes, you can absolutley mix lavender with your hair cream.  The only thing I would probably do is make sure that it is a natural, chemical free and odourless type as sometimes essentail oils can mix with the chemical aromas of the non natural types to deliver a smell that is not pleasant for anybody.

      Hope this helps.

  11. I really like lavender. I think it smells really nice and it’s very calming. I actually went to a lavender farm in Washington State but found out it was out of season and all of the fields were dried up.

I never knew it could be used for minor cuts or dandruff control. That’s two more reasons to like it now!

  13. Hi Paul, I enjoyed reading your article about lavender oil. I’m actually a member of Young Living as well and have been for over 10 years now. I can say that I agree with you on the potency of real essential oils versus diluted ones that smell the same but don’t have the same therapeutic benefits. I heard lavender oil can be ingested but Ive never tried that, instead I would put a few drops peppermint oil in a gallon of distilled water. This is a very refreshing energizing drink that actually helps with weight loss I found. did you know that lavender can also be used as an insect repellent?

    Reply
    • Hi Vince, I have heard that about lavender as well re insect – I am starting to think that they just might not like essential oils as a lot of them seem to work.

Peppermint is considered a ingestable oil and is known for its weightloss capabilities.  Lavender however is not considered safe for ingestion (some people do in lieu of Lavender Tea) and I would recommend avoiding it.

      Thanks for stopping by

  14. Lavender is one of my favorite essential oils. I have been using Lavender Oil to help me combat vertigo. I’m not sure why it works but it is amazing. All I need to do is take a couple of drops and I rub it behind my ears. It helps me to feel less dizzy. It isn’t a total cure, but it really makes me feel much better. And I also put a few drops in my evening bath with some Epsom salts as you suggested. I love the scent of lavender and find it very calming.

Thanks for the hangover remedy as well. I’ll be sure to share it with my boyfriend.
