5 Rosemary Essential Oil Uses for Men

Hey there oily dudes of essential oils and chemical free living. As usual, today’s post has been prompted by my daily behaviors in the use of essential oils. You see I have been pretty busy lately. A little bit of travel for our day job businesses, and I also spend long hours on the laptop. When I go through periods like this and get tired I tend to carry two oils with me. The first is my favorite and still the manliest oil on the planet is Northern Lights Black Spruce and the second is Rosemary. So it was time for me to look at the Rosemary essential oil uses.

It was only when I went back through my site to see what I can use Rosemary for that I realized that I have not actually ever written a post on it directly. I have certainly discussed its odor. It is a little pungent and certainly takes some getting used to. But I never wrote about the oil on its own. So obviously I am now remedying that with my top 5 Rosemary Essential Oil uses for men.

So site back, relax and let’s go on a Rosemeric (Is that a word?) journey:

What is Rosemary essential oil?

5 Rosemary Essential Oil Uses for Men - rosemary in a cup

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), is a perennial herb with evergreen needle-like leaves. Depending on the species, it can have white, pink, purple, or blue flowers. It is a member of the mint family and tastes delicious with a good roast lamb. Rosemary essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves.

The major compounds of Rosemary essential oil include a-pinene, borneol, b-pinene, camphor, bornyl acetate, camphene, 1,8-cineole, and limonene.

What does science say about Rosemary essential oil?

As with most essential oil research, the findings are limited with testing mainly undertaken on mice. The main research themes however center around its Antimicrobial and Antioxidant properties. I also found studies on its abilities to accelerate the healing of wounds – again in mice.

Ancient uses of Rosemary essential oil included:

  • Improving memory – (there is some minor scientific proof of this)
  • Increased clarity in thinking
  • Muscle soreness and relief

What are the Rosemary essential oil uses for men?

Ok, so now that is out of the way, let’s check out some of the manly uses of Rosemary Essential oils:

1. “Wake me up” with rosemary aroma

This is the main reason that Rosemary is one of the two oils that I take with me is for use when I am tired. Rosemary is probably the best ‘wake up’ oil there is – at least for me. I am not sure if it is the less than favorable aroma (although it is growing on me) but it really does keep me awake and working. Maybe there is some truth to the ancient uses for improved memory and clarity of thought after all.

How to use it

Simple – just sniff it from the bottle.

2. Rosemary oil can help hair and beard growth

5 Rosemary Essential Oil Uses for Men - rosemary

Again, some very minor scientific proof here but regardless, this is a use for this oil that I found everywhere. I probably wouldn’t recommend this for full on male pattern baldness. But if you are looking for a chemical free potion to add a little bit of thickness to your head or beard, then it is definitely worth a try. Just keep in mind that within the research outlined that results only really started to show after 6 months of use. So you will need to be in this for the long term…

Oh, and I found this article the other day where studies have shown the standard male beard to have more bacteria in it than the fur of a dog. I am not sure how accurate the study was but as Rosemary appears to have some Antimicrobial properties it might, if nothing else, just clean the face fur up a little.

How to use it

Mix 2 drops of Rosemary essential oil per 1 tablespoon of Coconut or Jojoba oil. Massage into the scalp or beard. You can also add few drops into your beard oil.

3. Muscle and joint soother: Rosemary oil the good alternative.

I have mentioned a number of times throughout this site in regards to my success with Panaway and Peppermint as a muscle and joint soother. Should you be missing the Panaway, you can try adding Rosemary to the mix. I actually tested this on my ankles – I have walked a lot today so they are a little stiff. I don’t see it as good as my usual mix but there was definitely some relief so I can definitely recommend as a substitute to Panaway (or even Wintergreen).

How to use it

Mix 3 drops of Rosemary, 3 drops of Peppermint and 1 teaspoon of coconut oil. Rub on sore muscles and painful joints to increase circulation and decrease stiffness.

4. Ease stress with Rosemary essential oil

Rosemary is actually quite calming in the diffuser or man bath and commonly used in the Man Versus Oils household for this purpose. I do use it to keep me awake as discussed earlier but there is a warmth to it when it is used in the diffuser. It also mixes really well with Tangerine.

Diffuser – 3 drops Rosemary and 3 drops Tangerine.

or

My world-famous Stuffed Roast diffuser recipe:

  • 6 drops Rosemary
  • 4 drops Sage
  • 2 drops Thyme
  • 1 drop Black Pepper

Man bath – 10 drops of Rosemary, 1 beer and a football/car racing/home renovation magazine of some description – fine, the latest girly trash mag will also do.

5. Odor eater: Rosemary oil the surprise

Funnily enough, this is one I found by mistake so I have added it here (my beautiful wife reminded me of this one just now). We had been away for the weekend over summer and left some raw meat off cuts in the bin in a closed up house. We had run out of Purification which is our go-to in a situation like this so I tried Rosemary – it worked a treat.

To be honest I am not sure why I picked it over Lemon, Lime, Peppermint, Eucalyptus or any other strong oil – It would be either because it was new and I wanted to try it out or I was too lazy to find the others – anyway, let’s just call it a successful mansperiment and move on.

How to use it

5 drops in the diffuser (oh, and of course remove the source of the odor as well).

Risks of Rosemary Oil

As with all essential oils, there are some risks:

  • Rosemary essential oil is not considered safe for use whilst pregnant. In fact if pregnancy exists within the household I would seriously recommend consulting a doctor prior to any essential oil use.
  • Rosemary essential oil should always be used with a good carrier oil.
  • I have read in a number of places that the use of Rosemary essential oil on the skin can increase the risk of seizure to those already susceptible. I could not however find any research or evidence of this but better to be safe than sorry I guess.

Conclusion

So there you have it, 5 uses of rosemary essential oil to assist you in your manly pursuits. As always, if you have any uses that I have missed or questions in regards to my uses above please do not hesitate to comment below.

  1. Interesting, never considered putting on Rosemary oil before. Do you know if Rosemary is commonly allergic to people or any change of skin problems (apart from seizures..) from using the oil? Does it smell really strong? I’m not sure I want to walk into an office and smell like a potted plant lol

    • Hey Heisenberg – it is a strong smell (I use it to wake me up) and if I am being honest probably not one you would use as a ‘fragrance’ at work (northern lights black Spruce and Lemon mixed with grapeseed oil is great for that).

As far as the skin is concerned, it is not considered a ‘hot’oil as such but I would recommend using a little to start with and mixing with a good carrier oil – just to make sure.

      Hope this helps
